Before the 2nd battalion of the East Lancashire regiment left Hong Kong yesterday, wreaths were laid at the base of the monument in Happy Valley Cemetery which was erected in memory of 648 officers, NCO’s, men, women and children of the old 59th Foot (now the 2nd East Lancashires) who died in Hong Kong between 1849 and 1858, the last occasion on which the Battalion was stationed here.
Seems to be an extremely high attrition rate for a Hong Kong posting.
Was there an epidemic during this 9-year period?
