After the war, there was shortage of food. When Hong Kong people went to buy rice and other foodstuff, they need to bring their ration card. It lasted until 1954-8. In the 1950s, there appeared many "economic canteens" selling a big dish of chicken or duck rice for only 20 or 30 cents. They were quite popular with grassroots workers. One of them was in Southorn Playground on the side of Luard Road which operated from 1948-2 to 1956-6.
