Kai Tak Airport circa 1957 The reclaimed runway is under construction to the left of the seawall terminal building in the centre of the photo. Above the terminal building is King George V School. On the right protruding above the arrival path are the three HSBC tower blocks for staff that eventually would be demolished to make way for the ‘new’ airport operations. View the original Flickr image here

The start on the new runway began in 1954.  I was a RAF Dog Handler at RAF Kai Tak and watched (and heard) the explosions as the top of a mountain was blasted away and the big lorries trundled down with their loads of rock ,to deposit them in the harbour.
