During the war, Flight Lieutenant Kenneth Sly was a 19 to 20 year old R.A.A.F. Lancaster pilot based in England.  His commission was  a short service one and that placed a ceiling on his promotion.  After the war, like many aircrew, he was made redundant and after a time in various other occupations including operating a small airline flying Catalina flying boats to Norfolk Island from his native Australia, he joined the R.A.F. in England as a Qualified Flying Instructor on a range of planes, both propeller and jet.  He later became a skilled linguist and moved to Hong Kong where he became the Officer Commanding the R.A.F. unit at Battys on the Peak.
