Every year or so a defence exercise was carried out at the camp. Airmen, unlucky enough to be chosen to defend the camp, were told to take up positions on the hillsides around the camp. The exercises started in daylight but went on through the night until, I believe, the invading force of Ghurka soldiers usually won. A friend once told me that he and some of his friends also armed themselves with Chinese firecrackers which they threw at the invaders. Apparently this was deemd to be outside the rules of the exercise and unsporting! (Andrew S)
