Causeway Bay outside Roxy cinema

The first photograph, taken outside the Roxy cinema, that I ever took in Hong Kong at the end of October 1957 - probably to show my sister the very daring slit skirt in the young lady's dress!  My camera was a simple 1916 vintage Vest Pocket Kodak camera - hence the low resolution.

Nice photo of the lady with the cheongsam.

Looked at the photo again but having difficulty placing the scene outside the Roxy Theatre. Cannot recall seeing trees on this section of Yee Wo Street/Hennessy Road. There should be more shops and signboards on the opposite side of the road. A view of the Roxy and Causeway Bay can be viewed here

Perhaps one of the inner roads of Causeway Bay. Leighton Road but not sure ?

Hi Moddsey,

You might be right!  I took the photograph on my old camera on the first day that we ventured into the city, not knowing where we were.  The RAF gharry (3ton Bedford lorry) dropped us off at Causeway Bay, and we were told to keep walking. I have always thought that it was outside the Roxy.  However, I am now puzzled by the trees,  and the buildings on the left do not look like the Hoover cinema.  If I remember correctly, this was not opposite the Roxy but further to the West, which might put it a bit beyond the photograph's location.  I doubt very much whether we would have wandered off the main tram line onto the Jaffa, Lochart or other roads in Wanchai.  I still have a gut feeling that it was more or less outside the Roxy.  It's a puzzle. Regards Andrew
