Entrance to Dragon Lodge

Entrance to the house my grandparents P. Marks and M.G. Marks-Groot (from the Netherlands) had rented in the early twenties of the 20th century, somewhere on the Peak (don't know the address though). Letter box on the left denotes my grandfather's name, the house would have been in the curve to the left. My gragdfather worked as an agent for the Nederlandsch-Indische Handelsbank for their Hong Kong rep office.

It was common practice that house letterboxes on the Peak would show the name of the lady of the house. A sliding panel would indicate whether the occupant was "In" or "Out". When "Out" was displayed, the caller would drop his/her card into the box, thus obviating the need of the occupant to meet the caller. If a telephone number was provided on the calling card, the occupant(s) would telephone the caller at their convenience, if considered necessary. House privacy would be maintained.
