James Legge (1815-1897), scholar-missionary to China in Hong Kong (1842-1873), and the first translator into any Western language of all of the Chinese Classics.
This large and beautiful oil painting of Legge was done by Christie, and hangs in Corpus Christi College Oxford, where Legge spent his years after Hong Kong as the first Professor of Chinese at Oxford, supported by an endowment from HK taipans.
