With the help of historical photos, we identified that the lamps now placed in the Dining Hall of University Hall, HKU, are the surviving chandeliers of the Peninsula’s old Ball Room.
The University Hall installed 7 of the chandeliers in the Dining Hall as early as 1968. The present Dining Hall was a Chapel of the Nazareth House built by the Paris Foreign Missions Society (M.E.P.), the predecessor of the all-male university hostel. Now, 4 of the chandeliers are hanging above the nave, 1 at the narthex, and 1 at the balcony right above. The last chandelier was hung by the apse, but out of concerns for structural integrity of the vaults above, it was taken down and now stored in the Archives Room of University Hall.
