A photograph of part of Hong Kong taken in 1923 - note the recently built Cenotaph commemorating the dead of the Great War. This was in fact constructed in 1923, and is almost an exact replica of the Cenotaph in Whitehall, London which was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens (1869-1944).
The area in the photograph looks totally different today. For example, the building on the left, which used to house the Hong Kong Club and was built in 1897, was demolished in 1981, despite a vigorous campaign to preserve it. It was replaced by a modern 25 storey building.
The print was purchased in the 1980's from 'Heirlooms' at 28a, Peak Tower Village Hong Kong.
