R.A.F. Little Sai Wan from the Cape Collinson Road

In 1958, the reclamation work for the new sports field in front of the camp was nearly complete. Pill box 37 had recently collapsed onto the shingle beach where the small headland can be seen.  This was also where the camp's firing range was. That hillside must have been riddled with spent bullets and I sometimes wonder whether any still come to light on the hillside that is close to the public toilets.  One day, when the sea was calm, I and a few pals were swimming on an incoming tide out to the buoy that is just visible near the passing ship.  It passed so close to us that crew members on the stern threw cigarettes and matches down to us.  They were too soggy to smoke and, fortunately, the propeller had been stopped!  Next day we read in the South China Morning Post that sharks had been spotted in the harbour.  We'd had a bit of luck that day!

Here is the same view in 1987.  Please see my 1987 folder for more comments
