I believe that this old cannon had been a signal gun and was fired whenever a ship belonging to one of the big trading houses had been sighted approaching the harbour. It stood on a circular patch of rough grass at Batty's Belvedere. This circular area was even older being the site for a signal mast and a small Victorian hut with a rounded roof. That hut was still there in 1958 when the R.A.F. had a small unit up there. The circular platform, signal mast and hut feature on several Victorian postcards of Batty's Belvedere.
