Found these images here. They were shot by an American soldier on leave during the Vietnam war in 1969, most likely between October to December 1969.

We can see the buildings
We can see the buildings above in the background of the Methodist Church view:
So he's a bit further along Johnston Road. I think the junction on the left is the turn into Thomson Road. The Pawn buildings are visible to the right of the trams in the distance.
