Yes, there is another photo here showing the boy and container by the gate.  I had always assumed that it was a free offering by the hospital for passersby, as you suggest.

Thank  you for your query - but I do not understand what tou require of me!     I am almost 90 years old and my eyesight is poor so that I now have difficulty reading .  If you just want to use the photos then feel free to do so - do not require payment.   If it is more than that do come back with more detail.

Good luck

John

it is okay, many thanks for sharing this precious
photo. I heard some stories about "tea pavilion" in Yuen Long. Since I saw your comment "there is another photo here showing the boy and container by the gate." so I thought there is another photo, showing this local tea facility.  Let me go through your album to see again.
Good luck, best wishes

Here's the other photo. We don't see the boy, but we can see the same wooden sign board, and behind that we see the legs of the wooden stand and one edge of the container:

(I've changed the title of both photos from Pok Wa to Pok Oi.)

Thank you admin and thanks Mr.  Watson.  I see the water bucket :-)

In the old days of Chinese society, some places would set up tea-houses for passers-by to quench their thirst. In old articles, someone mentioned that there was a teahouse near Pok Oi Hospital, but no one knows exactly where it is.

In April, I heard a story from a village head in Yuen Long town, he said that in the past, women from villages had to pass by here to go to Kam Tin to collect firewood. Because the firewood was very heavy, women would usually handle the firewood outside Pok Oi Hospital......

A photo from HKU library, you see the  main entrance archway of the Pok Oi Hospital in Au Tau, Yuen Long. Nex to the Victory farm. The road sign of Wong Uk Village can be seen on the left.  1962

I took the two photos of the gate and then the boy within a few minutes of each other.   I cannot remember now whether the container was always outside whenever I passed by.  At that time the hospital stood in isolation, no other buildings anywhere near it and paddy fields between it and Yuen Long.     I do not remember ever seeing women carrying wood from Kam Tin and would have thought that the shops within Yuen Long would have been a more likely source of such a commodity.  There were lots of shops in Yuen Long and few in Kam Tin.   We lads from RAF Sek Kong did go into Kam Tim walled village to hire sit-up- and- Beg type bicycles So that we could ride over the paddy field paths to go swimming in the pools on the flanks of Timo Shan behind Kam tin.

My vision is very poor mow so I hope that the foregoing is readable!!
