air raid shelter remnants of Belcher North

Date taken : 1970s-1980s

status : demolished

This photo is based on one reader's sharing with Oceandeep3000 (host) in his blog about Western District old days. That B&W image has been slightly enhanced by software for clearer viewing here.

One external remnant (on middle left) is even more prominent than the ones at the entry of Queen's Road East from Queensway.

It should have been well aware by those who frequented the area back in the 70s, e.g. residents of Shek Tong Tsui, Kennedy Town. The trapezium shape 'rock' above the front left of the car (location cue only, not in the same 3D plane), inner side of the pavement, is in fact a two-sided stairway leading to some portal.

A front view photo of this stairway has been shown in some HK history exhibitions before, with bilingual captions. A medicine ad was painted on the trapezium shape stone wall, black words on white rectangular background (not to ask me to reply about this medicine as from another ancient country of civilisation).

The whole hillside is cleared when the Belcher's started to build around 1997. Think the No. 8 of the street only started to exist after.

Today, it is approximately near the open space at the MTR HKU Station Exit C2, in front of Westwood (mall), the Belcher's.
That is, opposite side of 3 Belcher's Street.

The remnants of the ARP of Belcher South could still be seen today, if you walk on towards Kennedy Town. You should see them along the way down to the Kennedy Town Kai-fong Welfare Association.

There are still other remnants around South Lane nearby, also on the outskirts of the Belcher's. A local fb group has had some discussions and exploration photos shared before.

I am not sure if all above hillside air-raid shelters are connected internally by design, maybe even up to Pokfulam Road.

That's a good view.

At the bottom right corner of the photo, the pillar is part of the old fire station building, that is still standing today.

Walking up the ramp from there takes you to portal 13 of the tunnel network. A bit further along, the steps beyond the car led to portal 14, and if the photo was a bit sharper we'd probably be able to see portal 15 too.

I lived on the left side of this area in the 1990s, but I didn't get to see these portals as the area to the right was already hidden behind fencing in preparation for the excavation of the hill to build the Westwood shopping centre and the Belcher's.
