Robert Pierce Beaver was born on 26 May 1906 in Hamilton, Ohio, USA. He went to China in 1938 as a missionary serving the Evangelical and Reformed Church (currently called the United Church of Christ). Beaver was in Hong Kong during the Japanese invasion. He was sent to Stanley Internment Camp and subsequently repatriated in 1942 with other Americans.
