The big gate, or 'pai lau', was a temporary, decorated structure built to celebrate the coronation of Queen Elizabeth in 1953, and dating the photo to that year.
Thank you David for showing the whole photo of the gate and the guy-wires that supported it. I walked under the one near Alhambra Theatre one day after the parade. They decorated them with real flowers for the occasion. Regards, Peter
