Was located at 15 Hankow Road (at the junction with Peking Road), TST. Opening and closure dates are unknown, but closure was 1966 latest when Ho Tung Mansions were demolished.
Earliest mention is in the 1938 licensing session ( November 1938) for liquors. The following was notified:
Name of Applicants |
Description of License |
Sign of House |
Situation of House |
Whether the applicant has held a license to sell liquor in the Colony and, if so, for how long |
Stanley Joseph Swetland |
publican's license without bar |
Red Lion Inn |
15, Hankow Road, ground floor |
1 year |
As the license was issued in November 1938, one year of holding a permit would be approximately early 1938, this was used as a preliminary opening date.

Red Lion Inn after 1966
The Red Lion Inn probably moved to
LockAshley Road after demolition of Ho Tung Mansions. See this photo from 1982:The lion looks pretty much the same as it was at Hankow Road.

Ashley Road
Hi phil and moddsey,
thanks for correcting me. I originally meant Ashley Road, but for whatever reason I wrote Lock Road. Regards, Klaus
Red Lion Inn
Hi Klaus. The Red Lion Inn was a much-travelled watering hole in TST. Found the following addresses through matchbook covers and the internet:
57 Hankow Road;
15 Ashley Road and
9 Lock Road.
There also appears to be an Old Red Lion Inn on Lock Road in one of the posted photos.

Re: Red Lion Inns
I have created places for the subsequent generations of the Red Lion Inn based on posted photos, information from travel guides and matchbox labels.
