Downing Street,
5th May, 1939.
His Majesty The KING has been graciously pleased to award the Colonial Police Medal, for Gallantry, to the Members of Colonial Police Forces whose names appear below: —
Subera Eko, Sergeant, Gold Coast Police Force.
Peter Simpson Dickson Johnston, Sergeant, Palestine Police Force.
Mama Lafia Kanjarga, Sergeant, Gold Coast Police Force.
William Stirton McHardy, Sergeant, Hong Kong Police Force.
Mohamed bin Majid, Lance-Corporal, Straits Settlements Police Force.
Chan Ng, Coxswain, Hong Kong Police Force.
Christopher Stanley Pile, Lance-Sergeant, Hong Kong Police Force.
Gordon Charles Taylor, Sergeant, Hong Kong Police Force.
Frederick Douglas Bishop Tuckett, Inspector, Hong Kong Police Force.
In 2018 I was contacted by Douglas Whyte, then living in Singapore, who was planning a visit to HK with his elderly mother later that year. The latter was the niece of William (Bill) McHardy and his wife Mona, and the purpose of the family visit was to visit places “known” to the elderly lady - even though up until then she had never been to the Far East.
However she had grown up in Scotland enthralled by stories told by Bill and Mona about their lives in the Colony, both before and after WW2.
She also had fond memories of the stories told by Bill’s mother, “granny Isabella,” who had lived in HK pre-WW1. Isabella was married to Bill’s dad David McHardy, who also served in the HKP from 1891 until his death in the Colony in 1914. He is buried in the HK Cemetery, and after his death Isabella returned to Scotland with her children.
David and Isabella had 3 children; son Bill and 2 daughters.
Obviously the elderly lady never knew her grandfather David, but Isabella (who lived to a good age) told her some wonderful stories of a HK long gone.
I have a great deal of information on the McHardy family if anyone is interested. If so, please contact me on tideswell27@hotmail.com.
