In late August 2016 I was able to make contact with Peter Hutton Potts' son Simon who lives in Australia. Simon has not been able to provide much information but I am continuing to research my family connections in Australia.

There's a mention of a "Peter Potts" in a 1945 diary entry, but I wasn't sure if it was right because no Peter Potts is shown on the list of people interned in 1941.

I've just seen an earlier, 1943 diary entry that explains it:

2 Valentine boys & PH Potts came from S'hai.

I guess the three boys had been at school in Shanghai, then in 1943 they were brought to Hong Kong to be with their parents. They probably travelled on the Teia Maru ship that had just collected the Americans and Canadians who were being repatriated from Stanley.

Thank you David, Yes I am certain that PH Potts would be Peter. The Hutton Potts have a very bad habit of not using our full surname but rather signing "H Potts" and others constantly interpret the "Hutton" as a middle name rather a double surname.

Peter was my dad. i live in thailand now. have a lot of old family photo albums from dad etc. remember going to visit jack hutton potts in the uk with dad and family when i was younger

let me know if you want any scans of old family photos from hong kong and japan before that.

how do we edit peoples birth dates etc ? i see its wrong in this entry

To Alex H P: I am Joanna nee HUTTON POTTS. Peter is my 2nd cousin. Our mutual great grandfather being Lipton - Jack is my uncle, his oldest brother George being my father.  I am in contact with Jack's son, David. I have absolutely no information on Peter other than a possible birth date and a name for a spouse. Am I correct in assuming that you are Olly's brother?. I would be most grateful if you would contact me regarding all our family history.

Hi Alex,

Thanks for getting in touch. Yes please to any old family photos of Hong Kong you can share with us. Here's how to upload a photo: https://gwulo.com/node/2076

Any diary extracts are very welcome too, to add to our collection of wartime diaries that help understand what it was like in Stanley: https://gwulo.com/node/39540

I've made you the owner of this page so you can add / correct information, and I've sent an email to you and Joanna to put you both in touch.

Regards, David

Many years ago I interviewed Mr Potts in his office in Central. I was investigating the years of the Japanese occupation for for my recently published book, ASIA BETRAYED: How Churchill Sacrificed The Far East To Save England.  Mr Potts produced his diary written during imprisonment at Camp Stanley and asked what I thought he should to do with it. I read it and told him it was an important document. I suggested he donate it to Hong Kong University Library where similar papers were on reference. I thoroughly enjoyed our visit and felt he contributed valuable information to my research.

AlexHP:

I would also like to be in contact with you. I am researching details on some of the former members of a social club I belong to (and which Peter HP was also a member, along with G.A. Hutton Potts.) I would greatly appreciate the chance to read his wartime diary (or such parts that you do not wish to keep private) if that would be at all possible.

Did you find a way to make contact without putting details on a public forum?

Many thanks.

Douglas Bulloch: I am the Granddaughter of George Frederick Hutton Potts, daughter of his son George Ronald Hutton Potts. I never knew my grandfather, he had passed away before I was born,  nor did I know any of the family history while I was growing up. If you would care to share any information you have I would be most appreciative.
