I've got the upgraded maps to the point where you can try them out. So for "Map of all Places", here's the old version:
http://gwulo.com/place-map-search-OL
And here's the new one:
Improvements in the new map:
- Much faster to load
- pop-up windows look better
- better clustering
- easier to use and smaller download for mobile devices
If you try the new map please could you leave a comment below with:
- the browser you used
- whether it is faster than the old version
- any problems / things not working properly
- any other feedback
eg I've just tried using the Chrome browser on a Windows 7 PC. The new map is around 8x faster to load than the old map (3 seconds vs 24 seconds). No problems with zooming in or out, switching to and from full-screen, or changing layers.

New Map upgrade
Hi David,
I tried out the new map in brief under 64-bit Windows 7 SP1 with all latest hotfixes under Google Chrome Version 48.0.2564.97 m (64-bit). Zooming in and out is very fast and the display is not that clutterred anymore. I have only opened a few markers at random and they looked fine.
I will try it out under Windows 10 later.
Thanks & Best Regards,
T
re: New Map upgrade
Hi Thomas, thanks for the feedback. If I don't hear from anyone having problems in the next few days I'll switch the links in the menu bar to send people to the new map.

Re: Nw Map upgrade
Hi David,
It looks good under 64-bit Windows 10 Professional with Google Chrome 64-bit browser. Just tired it with an Android 6.0 under Chrome mobile version 47.0.2526.83. Also looking good. Had been clicking on markers and zooming in and out. No error so far.
Thanks & Best Regards,
T
New Map
Hi David,
this is a real improvement. Its so fast! Thank you for this work. I use Windows 7 (32 bit) with Internet Explorer 11. Also fast with no problems using Firefox.
I tried the new version also on my laptop with Windows 10 and Edge. It also works much faster than the old version, but I think its a bit slower than with Windows 7. Possibly this is due to slower processing speed on the laptop, but I thought it might be worth to check this.

Hi David
Hi David
The new version is very good - seems much 'cleaner' and is very fast and responsive on my Windows 7 and 32 bit system. Well done. Andrew
re: New Map upgrade
Thanks for the positive feedback. Tomorrow I'll update the link in the left-column's menu to use the new map.
Klaus, I'm not using Win10, but as long as it works ok I'm happy. Hopefully the team behind the Leaflet map library I'm using will chase down any performance problems with Edge.

I've updated the link for 'View map' in the main menu to point to the new map at http://gwulo.com/map-of-places
I've also updated the map to include layers for the scanned paper maps on the site, to make it easier to find them. The number in brackets after the layer name is the zoom that the layer becomes available. The current zoom for the map is shown on the left, under the + / - buttons.
Please let me know if anything isn't working, or isn't clear.

new map feature
Hi David, it works well! And I'm almost excited about the easy historical map overlay.
There are just two remarks. First is the fact that if you go from magnification grade 17 to 18, all written informations on current buildings as well as roads disappear. Second is that you cannot switch off satellite images to only have a road map. I sometimes found this feature very helpful.

New maps
Hi Klaus,
I've changed around the base layers for the map and hopefully they work better now.

new map feature II
Hi David,
much better now. The choice of map styles is a real improvement.

Another small change - the
Another small change - the markers now appear in the layer switcher, so you can hide them if you like. (Can be useful to hide the markers when looking at an old scanned map.)
