Archibald Henry "Mick" Elston was born in Islington, London, UK. He served as a Corporal in the 7th London Infantry during World War 1. He suffered a serious injury on July 1, 1916 at the Battle of the Somme. This injury prevented him from joining the Metropolitan Police. He joined the Hong Kong Police on 3-24-1919 and arrived in Hong Kong on 7-30-1919. He was promoted to Police Sergeant on 1-1-1924, Sub-Inspector 11-1-1927, Inspector 1-1-1935, Chief Inspector 4-9-1937, Acting Assistant Superintendent of Police 10-17-1940, Assistant Superintendent of Police 7-23-1941, and Superintendent of Police on 9-1-1947. He retired from the police on 8-9-1948 and moved to the UK.
He married Marjorie Garrod on August 9, 1924. Both Marjorie and her younger son, Jeremy, were evacuated to Australia prior to invasion. She worked as a government censor in Sydney. Jeremy was at Kings School, Paramatta, as a student/boarder. Both of their sons, Michael and Jeremy, were born in Hong Kong.
