A few years later on the other side of the world, I went through a craze for these with my schoolfriends. Scour the sheds and garages for old pram wheels, scrounge some wood & nails, a bit of string for the steering then off to the hill to race. For reasons lost to the mists of time, we called them "manny-gannies".
The vehicular arms race hit its peak when a friend's dad (who owned a car-repair shop) welded one together out of angle-iron. Hard work pushing it up the hill, but it went back down like a rocket.
