Looking at this map, http://gwulo.com/node/6708, I'd guess the photographer was on Chatham Road, roughly half way between Observatory Road and Austin Road.
Thank you very much for this high-quality photo showing the Hong Kong Observatory in 1905 (HKO). I am collecting old photos for the HKO. Is this photo for sale?
sorry, I'm collecting old photo as well. Are you personally collecting or on behalf of some institute? If you are on behalf of institute, I can give u high res. 600 dpi. for free :)

Yes I am collecting on behalf of the Hong Kong Observatory and I very much appreciate your very generous offer to provide us an electronic copy of this photo free of charge. My email address is cmshun@hko.gov.hk
At the same time, I am also collecting historical typhoon and weather disaster photos out of my personal interest and resource. My intention is to have good visual information of the past weather disasters so that I could write up some blogs or articles for public educational purposes. So if you or other friends here have something to offer, please contact me too.

Re: Kowloon Photo
I believe it is taken in Kowloon. Up on the hill, I think that is the Hong Kong Observatory main building.
