Hi David - looks like you're right. Here's an 1895 photo that appears to show the same scene across Hung Hom bay; the ridgeline etc certainly seems to match
Hung Hom, Kowloon, c.1895.
The district is still relatively undeveloped. On the far shore, buildings of the Hong Kong & Whampoa Dock Co., founded in 1866, can be seen. Silting up of the bay, which later required reclamation (in 1904), can be clearly seen.
99.999% is SMS Irene. So the photo should be taken in 1897 Oct/Nov, this help me date Humg Hom's photo. BTW, any idea about the building to the rear of Irene?

re: Unknown
Hard to see in detail but I'd guess western Tsim Sha Tsui. You can see Kowloon Peak or Fei Ngo Shan in background. Be good to identify the ship
Hung Hom?
The hills behind Kowloon Docks were extensively quarried and jagged-looking. Maybe somewhere around there?

Unknown ship
The ship looks very like the one on an ebay offer at the moment

re: SMS Irene?
the photo on ebay appears to show SMS Irene, which was the command ship of the German Far East Cruiser Division in the 1890s (according to Wikipedia).
The ship in hfsiu's photo looks very similar to Irene - check the blueprint here:

re Hung Hom
also this photo gives a good overview of the area

S.M.S. Irene
Really looks like S.M.S Irene.

S.M.S Irene stayed at Hong Kong for maintenance and repair in October/November 1897.

Re: Building to the rear of SMS Irene
I think the building was associated with the Dockyard as the entrance to the drydock can be seen on the right.
