Annelise looks like you nailed it. You can see the house in the foreground in this photo here if you open the larger size. There's the distinctive rooftop and the little brick hut next to it. funny I wondered if it was around Garden Terrace.
These show up on the 1924 map, on the southern (upper) portion of the land that now houses Estoril Court. You can just see Bowen Road in the background if you zoom in to this photo.
The layout of the buildings on the 1901 map fits with these buildings, although the outline of the individual buildings and the roads do look slightly different.
The other photos of these buildings at https://gwulo.com/node/5524/photos all match with this photo, so it looks as though there were some changes made after 1901 when the map was drawn.
I think these are Scarteen and Ballinode further down McDonnell Rd ... see how well they match the 1901 map. with the garden bumped out in front of Scarteen
I'm pretty sure you were right the first time. If you look at this map of the buildings, https://gwulo.com/node/43513#18~22.27518~114.15673~Map_by_GovHK-Markers…, you can see that the two buildings at 1-4 Bowen Road had the same shape, like the two in the main photo above, but that Scarteen and Ballinode are very different from each other.
Also if you look at the photo below, the two buildings in the main photo appear at bottom centre, just below the filter beds and at the location of 1-4 Bowen Road.

I'm pretty sure these are two of the three mansions above Macdonnell Road - now Estoril Court. see also
Everything tagged "early MacDonnell Road"
Edit: I now think this is incorrect

The 1901 map does not line up with this photo. Is the photo cropped ? Can we see a bit more ?
