[2018 Update: The animated map isn't working at present.]

Click "[Play]" on the map below, and watch the city grow over the years. (Subscribers, please click here if you can't see the map).

<?php
print views_embed_view("place_map_search_OL_animated","page_1" );
?>

Other things to try:

  • Go full-screen: Click the "arrows" icon in the top-right corner of the map to see a full-screen version.
  • Watch other areas: You can drag the map around, and zoom in or out to watch the development of other areas.
  • Watch just one type of Place. eg Here's a map showing Police Stations in Hong Kong. You'll probably want to zoom out first to see all of Hong Kong, then click Play to see how their number increases over time.

What else could you do with this?

If you wanted to show the development of the MTR system, you could add stations as Places, and show an animated map of those.

Or with a bit more work, we could show an animation of reclamation over the years.

Something I would be very interested to see would be an animation of Tony Banham's "Not the slightest chance". He gives extensive records of when and where every casualty was during the fighting in 1941. An animated map advancing hour-by-hour would show how the fighting moved around the island over time.

Any other ideas?

FAQs

  • Why the empty spaces? The Map relies on the Places that we've created. No Place, no marker on the map. You're welcome to add more Places - just click here.
  • I've made a Place, but it's not on the map. See if it's on either of these lists: Places without a completion date, or Places without a location. A Place must have a completion date and a location before it appears on the animated map.
  • Why is that Place still shown in 2011, it was demolished years ago? It needs to have its demolition date filled in. See this list for details.
