A sad little message from Uncle Harry ((in Bath, Somerset)) saying that his father (also my Dad's father) had passed away on 16th April 1944.

There was an air raid this a.m. seemed to be on shipping, some one said it looked like a super-fortress.

In draw, we won a sewing kit, a portion of Naptha soap, and tooth powder.


Mr Kiley, the Chairman of the few remaining Americans in camp, paid a visit yesterday to Lt Hara and asked him when the American parcels were arriving in camp. Kiley spoke to us this morning while we were wood cutting and he said that Hara received him very cordially and said he was glad he had come. In reply to his question Hara said there were no more parcels in town.

Have started curling hair again, but it doesn't last long.  ((No perms in Stanley!))

Worked in am.  Sheila came in afternoon to discuss Easter things, then to Benediction, then C.A. Section Meeting where I read quarterly report: Gladys, H. Crutwell and Reddish came.

A shell whizzed over us in morning, and no one knows quite why but it was said that one of our large planes was round.

Visited Mrs Edgar (Mr E most charming and friendly); Forsters (to have Paddy and Maureen in show), and Annie (Van Der Lely) where I had tea, and Rennie announced he and Annie are marrying in April, and invited me to be bridesmaid.

During the last few days I have been suffering from another mood of black depression. Life in this place seems to be growing more and more damnable and I wonder despairingly how much longer it is to go on. So many stupid little things happen which, in these trying circumstances, become upsetting in a most absurd way. I suppose living in these intolerably crowded conditions has gradually worn us down till our nerves are all on edge.

Allies cross the Rhine Bonn & Coblenz & Japs intern F.I.China Gov’t. [?] & troops etc. Ribbentrop’s speech although not clear indicates German trend toward surrender.

Canadian private parcels were given out - mostly soap, clothing and cigarettes.

Saw Charlie Rozeskwy re magazine.

At 12 we had first babies' rehearsal on the Bowling Green.  Some of them are worse, but some better than I expected. 

Had apple pudding (tin) tonight.

Mrs Joan Witham gave a talk about Convents at girls' club.

W. Spark died, aged 62.

In connection with the parcels I have had raffles every evening for residue food stuffs and also toilet requisites from the Americans. On Saturday I got my store of clothing, a khaki towel, woollen and cotton singlet, grey and white underpants which was very good.
