31d Wyndham Street [????-????]

Submitted by jill on Mon, 10/04/2021 - 03:22

Leslie Warren temporarily moved the showroom of C.E. Warren & Co. to 31d Wyndham Street after the death of his father, Charles Warren, the 30-32 Des Voeux Road premises having being sold in 1921. This is reported in the HK Telegraph and SCMP of 6 June 1924. The address is described as being opposite the Dairy Farm. Please could someone confirm if I have placed the pin in the right place.

Hung Chiu KAN [????-????]

Submitted by jill on Tue, 01/01/2019 - 02:32

I’d be interested to know more about the identity of Kan Hung Chiu, purchaser of 30-32 Des Voeux Road from C. E. Warren & Co. Ltd. for the sum of $125,000 on 2 July 1921 and what the building then became. The funeral of his widow in the following China Mail report of 16 September, 1927 cited by Carl Smith indicates a man of some wealth: Mrs Kan Hung-chui, wife of prominent businessman – one of largest funeral processions in HK stretched from Central Market to Arsenal St. 3,000 people (employees of Nanyang Tobacco Co. and 2,000 coolies.)

William ANDERSON [????-1950]

I'm interested to find out more about William Anderson who was the Managing Director of Anderson Music Company and who was one of the first residents of Broadwood Road and close neighbour of my grandfather, Charles Warren. The Rate Book of 1918-1919 has William Anderson at "Gilstead", 18 Broadwood Road, which I believe was one of the houses built by my grandfather's company.  (The Jury List recording Anderson at 19 Broadwood Road must be a typo).

Jose Antonio GOULARTE D'AQUINO [1882-????]

Son of Honorato d’’Aquino and Helena Goularte d’Aquino. Married Anna Maria de Consuelo d’Aquino b. 9.3. 1891.

The D’Aquinos or De Aquinos were a prominent Macanese family dating back to the eighteenth century and who emigrated to Hong Kong in the late nineteenth century. Dr Roy Eric Xavier has kindly sent me the link to his recent article on Macanese families:  http://www.macstudies.net/2015/08/31/mac-families-in-context-part-2/
