Art Deco style building at #14 Wong Ma Kok Road. Currently a Grade 3 listing.

Chinese wiki says:
1930s - Built as a private residence.
1948 - Converted to a public clinic and maternity ward.
1970 - 74 - operated as a materinity ward only
1974 - 75  - home health and dental clinic
1976 - 2001 - ?
2002 - present - provides outpatient and obstetric services

If anybody can add an further information, please comment. I've stuck a build date of 1935 as a starting point, but it would be nice to find an accurate one.

Hong Kong Police Orchestra/band Stanley Camp.

Submitted by Rob Woods on Fri, 06/25/2021 - 04:50

Hello, my grandfather was in the Hong Kong Police before being interned at Stanley Camp with my Grandmother, my Dad and his two brothers when the Japanese invaded Hong Kong.

His name is Harold Woods and I believe his nickname was "Timber" Woods.

He played the clarinet and was in the Hong Kong Police Orchestra or Band and their performances were played on the radio i believe.

Just wondering if anyone has any recollection of this and if there are any recordings or pictures that are available of the orchestra that anyone has access to?

We were dancing in the Rose Room of the Peninsula Hotel in Hong Kong on the evening of Saturday the 6th December, 1941.  During the evening an announcement was made on the loudspeaker, recalling all service personnel to report to their headquarters immediately.  It was an ominous sign that war with Japan was close at hand.

Natasha du Breuil and Colonel Valentine Burkhardt

I have recently written all I have been able to find out about two amateur naturalists who were active in Hong Kong from the 1940s until their deaths in the 1960s. Their stories uncovered fascinating accounts of life in China between the wars and then of their life together in Hong Kong. They are Natasha du Breuil (ca 1891-1966) and Colonel Valentine Burkhardt (1884-1967). The latter wrote articles (which were read avidly by my wife when the Sunday Post-Herald arrived) and books on Chinese creeds and customs after his life in military intelligence.
