Dear all - first time from a long time fan of the page!
I'm wondering if anyone can answer the question of what is the oldest pub in Hong Kong? The best guess I had was jimmys or Ned kellys but I can't find a difinitive answer anywhere. Maybe captains bar in the MO?
Hi all,
For years(actually from childhood) I can't help but notice that there is a lot of confusion on the geographic divisions of neighbourhoods in Hong Kong. The more research I did, the more I have found there has been a vast amount of manipulation from the Establishment (real estate developers, the government, the MTRC, etc.) on our perception of this space that we live in. It is chaotic and full of contradictions at the moment, and actions should taken to protect our heritage.
I have today read about a giant stick insect seen in Hong Kong by a Mt Nicholson bird watcher, Clive Viney,in 1988 that measured 12 inches long and a leg to leg measurement of 22cm. The body length of 12 inches is just 2 inches short of the world record of 14 inches, also in China.
Does anyone have any similar stories of giant HK stick insects?
I was at the British Library in London in late May `15 looking through their collection of the Hong Kong Police Magazine from the early 1950s to 1970. It provided a fascinating and often humourous glimpse into colonial policing during that era. It was also bi-lingual but I cannot read Chinese. I was actually looking for unusual fauna-related stories and I wasn`t disappointed, I found an account of a Chinese Giant Salamander which I vaguely have a memory of seeing before but it was good to see again.
My late father, YOUNG Sze Kuen,( also known as Anthony Norman ) joined ICI Hong Kong in the late 1930s and early 1940s. Then he, and my late mother Annie Lam Young ,started a company named Yuen Hing Hong & Co. Ltd. (YHH) in the 1940s.
I am looking for biographical details and place of death of Mr Alfred H.Crook, who I know lived in Hong Kong in 1909 and was living in London in 1953.
Does anyone have any memories or observations of dugongs or mermaid folklore in Hong Kong and has anyone ever written up a comprehensive history of the 1993 Mermaid rumour in Hong Kong? Dugongs are now very rare indeed or extinct in the Pearl River Estuary.
I have an account of a 1940 Dugong/sea cow seen off Lantau and I`ve also heard of a mystery animal called the Lutung or Luting fish whose identity I would like to know.

Hi Everyone,
This website is great! I grew up in Hong Kong and have lived in Mansfield Road over the 1990s. Wondering are there any photos or photos anyone has taken of the Peak area Guildford road to Mansfield road during 1960s onwards? It is a very peaceful area and I have revisited it after moving to California. There is even a football team that plays in the park every now and then... my eldest son's childhood was that park took him there almost each day and was nice chatting to parents. Am interested in having a look at what it was during that era.
