"THE remains of Private Philipps, of E. Co., Royal Welsh Fusiliers, who died in hospital yesterday, were interred at Happy Valley this morning with full military honours."

Robert PATTERSON [1849-1899]

Police Constable (No. 23) in the Hong Kong Police Force who had served his full fifteen years tenure having joined on 12th August 1884 but tragically died just before he was about to retire on his pension and travel back home to the British Isles with his wife. He had previously served in the Irish Constabulary, the 93rd Highland Regiment and the Dundee Police Force before being posted to Hong Kong.

A midshipman of H.M.S. Orlando who accidentally shot himself in the head with a Mauser revolver at Castle Peak, New Territories, when out on a shooting expedition with mates. 

Frank TUERSLEY [1898-1939]

Former Gunner in the Royal Horse Artillery during WWI and later clerical officer in the Royal Naval Dockyard who died in Hong Kong shortly after his arrivial in the Colony in April 1939.

TUERSLEY. – At Royal Naval Hospital at 7.30 p.m. yesterday, Frank Tuersley, aged 41, after a short illness. Cortege will leave the hospital at about 4 p.m. to-day.”

Mary MONRO [1963- ]

Mary Monro is author of Stranger In My Heart (Unbound, 2018), which gives the eye witness account of her father, John Monro MC RA, who fought at the Battle of Hong Kong, was interned by the Japanese at Sham Shui Po and escaped 1200 miles across China to reach Chongqing. There he was made Assistant Military Attaché and spent the next 18 months supporting and trying to liberate the POWs he'd left behind. Mary retraced her fafther's escape route across China and the book also includes her journey of discovery.

Cecil William SHERRINGTON [1878-1962]

He was an Assistant at Caldbeck MacGregor & Co.

 

"A couple of 'Japs' were fined $10 each for attempting to overturn a rickshaw in which was seated Mr Sherrington of Caldbeck, McGregor and Coy's Office. The 'Japs' were seamen belonging to the Müke Maru and yesterday, being under the influence of drink, they and three others were molesting people on the roadway near Hung Hom."

George Benjamin DODWELL [1851-1925]

Merchant and Trading agent. In 1872 he joined the export/import business Adamson, Bell and Company in Shanghai. The company dealt in shipping, silk and tea. In 1875 it opened an office in Hong Kong and also started in insurance.
