Fermented Beancurd

I would like to check if the following is true: During the Japanese occupation, British prisoners of war received fermented beancurd as substitute for cheese when their Chinese servants visited them in the camp.

I don't have a yes/no answer, but it doesn't seem quite right. I don't think much contact was allowed between POWs and the outside.

Many POWs were shipped from HK to Japan as forced labour, and would have eaten a Japanese diet there - probably including soy beans and beancurd.

If the story applies to anyone, it might have been the civilian internees at Stanley.

Have you looked at Tony Banham's "We shall suffer there"? That might have an answer for you.
