10 Jul 1945, Leo Landau's wartime diary

((Date written as 'Tuesday 9 July 1945', but Tuesday that week was 10 July.))

Our rations at present are very low, especially the standard of vegetables. The only redeeming factor is the weekly meat issue which for the past month has been fairly consistent. An example of our average day – breakfast: Grd. rice. Lunch: swamp greens - boiled & rice. Dinner: swamp greens & marrow - boiled and rice with 3 pints of oil for 900 men!

The camp has got over its elated feeling over the war news, and now that there seems to be a lull, have resigned themselves to spending another winter as P.O.W's. Everyone is feverishly digging gardens, ready for early autumn planting.

I have not heard for several months from the family, but receive my parcels regularly. Convinced that Rose & Harry have left the colony as the sender last week was Eddie!

Working parties are still going steady and fortunately no accidents in the tunnels. This work is extreemly (sic) precarious especially during wet weather.

The stand-by working party were called for - 30 men urgently, in the rain, a job which lasted a couple of minutes under the anxious arrangement of Boon himself. The C.C. car would not start, so man power was required. The working party supplied the H.P.

The purchase of food is still obtainable at prohibited prices! A clearing of a few sentries are under arrest for various crimes - stealing of rice, stealing of tyres from the C.C. garage, and also stealing of a machine gun from Jubilee. All this comes under loyalty and fighting spirit of a victorious army. Who said so!
