19 May 1943, Leo Landau's wartime diary

Against orders we slept outdoors. A nights sleep against punishment! It's worth it. The camp R.S.M visited us at 10.30pm and ordered us indoors - we REFUSED. Pompous Hopkins then showed his authority by ordering his party indoors or else. He was ignored and blamed No 3 party for being a bad influence on the party No 2.

The other night some of the sentries covered with blankets the men who were asleep on the ground, also drew our pickets attention to the men. They must be covered. We should show more care to our the wellfare of our commardes.

On a brick fatigue all morning. The camp will be inspected by the O.C at noon.

The N.C.O's changed into shorts today. The first time I have seen the Japanese dressed in this manner.

The camp commandant wishes known that any person breaking rules by sleeping outdoors will be dealt with on the spot. The bugs get worse as the days go by. I feel if something drastic is not done very shortly the men will defy the order. A very unpleasant situation will be the outcome.
