We believe Mum was born in Shanghai in 1922, but we don't have a birth certificate to confirm this. She was adopted by Arthur George Borras (no proof of official adoption exists) and Lo S. Min, whom he married in Hankow, circa 1916-1920. AG Borras was an official with the Chinese Maritime Customs from April 1912 to February 1944, working from Lappa Island, China. She attended Diocesan Girls' School, the earliest dated photo (dance practice) is from 1933. Before the Japanese invasion of Hong Kong she relocated to Macau (earliest dated photo 1940). We believe she was 100% Chinese as her children have 50%/50% European/Chinese DNA. She married Dad (Walter Duncan) in May 1949. He was a Scotsman from near Edinburgh, who worked for the Hong Kong Government, prior to retirement for the VMO (Vegetable Marketing Organisation).
My parents separated during a holiday to the UK in 1966 and Mum moved to Edinburgh and brought up 3 children as a single mother.

A. G. Borras is mentioned here regarding BAAG activities in Macao.
He is also mentioned in "The Lone Flag" by John Pownall Reeves, a memoir of the British Consul in Macao during WWII. It is a good read and lists out the names of British subjects in Macao at the time. See here

Many thanks for your comments and links. I’m learning a lot of things about my family from this website. Interestingly, Borras was compulsory retired (prior to completion of an investigation) from the Chinese Customs in February 1944 (the month of the instructions from PL BAAG).
