14 Aug 1945, Arthur Nathaniel Braudé's wartime diary

Submitted by Peter on

Last night, even up to bed time, the stories were still coming in. Mrs Lee (Beeton (sp.?) of Peninsula Hotel Hairdressers) shouted out that the war was over and we would soon be free. A small tug left the bay with a white flag flying, this morning. Much conjecturing! There are few sentries about and those that do wander into the huts to "trade" have no rifles. We hear that the war ended on the 10th, and that our Navy will anchor inhere tomorrow and will fire a salute! Where the story came from, I don't know but most of us believe it. We have been busy getting our bits of gear packed and our best clothes washed and our shoes polished! All ready to make a respectable appearance. What do you think? Just before evening muster, a load of cases arrived. We speculated as to its contents — food supplies, something to drink, clothing! We could never have guessed for they contained hundreds of rolls of American made toilet paper!!!!!
