Dr. Hu Shih-Chang (Woo Sai Cheung) was educated at Wah Yan College in Hong Kong, entering in 1939. He excelled academically, was diligent and conscientious, and frequently topped his class. In 1941, when the Pacific War broke out, he was studying in the Matriculation Class but could not complete the year due to the Japanese invasion of Hong Kong.
Following the fall of Hong Kong, he moved to mainland China to continue his studies. He first studied Mechanical Engineering at the South Western Associated University in Kunming. In 1943, he transferred to the Cheloo University, where he completed one and a half years of medical studies. In 1944, with the Japanese forces advancing, he joined the Chinese Navy and was sent to Miami in the United States for training. He served as a Pharmacist Mate and received professional training at the U.S. Naval Medical School. Upon demobilization after the war, he had been promoted to the rank of Ensign and served as an instructor at the Chinese Naval Medical School.
After the war, on the recommendation of the Headmaster of Wah Yan College, Dr. Hu was admitted to the University of Hong Kong Medical School. He later became a paediatrician at Queen Mary Hospital and Queen Elizabeth Hospital, served as a Lecturer at the University of Hong Kong, and held leadership roles including President of the Hong Kong Paediatric Society. He also received further training in the United Kingdom, obtaining the Diploma in Child Health (London) and Membership of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh.
In his later years, Dr. Hu developed a keen interest in Chinese art, particularly lacquerware, and was recognised as an expert by the United Nations Development Programme.
