The first annual athletic meeting of King's College, held under the distinguished patronage of His Excellency Sir William Peel, K.C.M.G., K.B.E., was a great success. The event took place yesterday afternoon on the Caroline Hill ground, attended by a large crowd. Fortunately, the weather kept clear, but a strong wind rather handicapped the runners, and therefore the times recorded were not as good as expected.
At the conclusion of the events, Mr. J. J. Ferguson addressed the gathering, stating that it was not his duty to keep them there with a long speech. He heartily congratulated all those who had helped to make the meeting a success. On behalf of the College, he congratulated the winners and condoled with those who "did not come in," adding that he hoped they would try again at the next meeting. Mr. Ferguson then had great pleasure in calling upon Mr. Alfred Morris (Headmaster) to say a few words. Mr. Morris heartily congratulated the sports committee on the hard work they had put in towards the success of the meeting, noting that the competitors did not realise the difficulty of organising sports. He congratulated the successful competitors and wished the losers better luck next year. He humorously wished the boys would pay as much attention to their books as they had to sport that afternoon. Mr. Morris concluded by saying, "Sports and games play a very important part in school life, but you must not make sports your end and aim." (Applause).
Mr. Morris then presented the prizes to the winners.
