Pokfulam Reservoir Road [c.1870- ]

Introductory remark: David has posted many details about this road here.

Pokfulam Reservoir Road runs from Pokfulam to Victoria Gap. It connects Pokfulam Road with Peak Road and is 2,7 km long (today).

It looks as if it existed already in the 1840s. In the 1870s, the road was re-routed to give a smoother ascent and decent. Both roads are shown in the map below: the older road is dark green, the younger one light green.

In 1886, a call for tender was published for the construction of culverts and retaining wall, likely to improve the quality of the road.

Former Granite Cross

Editions of the Directory & Chronicle (for instance: https://archive.org/details/directorychroniclechina1915/page/1086/mode/2up) mentions:

"Another road leads from Victoria Gap to Pokfolum (sic) and Aberdeen, and at the side of this, about half a mile from the Gap, a small granite cross has been erected. This bears the inscription :—“‘W. W. H. 1869” and marks the scene of a brutal murder there by a Chinese footpad, the victim being Mr. Holworthy, an officer of the Ordnance Department, whom he felled with a bamboo and robbed, inflicting fatal injuries.
