Ezekiel Isaac Ellis arrived in Hong Kong around 1876 and had a long record of duty as clerk with Messrs. E. D. Sassoon & Co. He was a popular member of the Jewish community and Secretary of the (Ohel Leah) Synagogue.
He was first married to Madelien Ellis. They had 12 children:
- Charles Ezekiel (Oswald) Ellis (b. 15 July 1882, d. in 1949),
- Flora Edgar (née Ellis) (b. 24 August 1883, d. 18 December 1934),
- Jack H. (Ezekiel) Ellis (b. 2 August 1884, d. in 1946),
- Frederick Ezekiel Ellis (b. 29 August 1885),
- Emanuel Ezekiel Ellis (b. circa 1887, d. in 1930),
- Victor Elias Ellis (b. 24 May 1888, d. 6 July 1896),
- Albert Reginald Ellis (b. 3 August 1889, d. in 1967),
- Arthur Sassoon Ellis (b. circa 1891, d. 26 June 1950),
9. Grace O. Ellis (b. 1893*, d. in 1979),
10. Leontine Ellis (b. circa 1894, d. 17 August 1942),
11. Felix Maurice Ellis (b. 26 June 1895, d. 6 September 1949),
12. Sophie Ellis (b. 28 October 1897, died in 1990).
After Madelien had passed on, Mozelle Ellis became his second wife. They had no children. Ezekiel Isaac Ellis is buried in the Jewish Cemetery at Happy Valley.
*Jewish Historical Society (JHS) gave DoB 12 December 1895. Ancestry gave birth year as 1893. The latter birth year seems more reasonable as Felix Maurice Ellis was also born in 1895.
