The Oriental Christian Gracious Light Church was founded in 1909 by American missionary Miss Du Yulan. The aim was to spread the gospel to the boat people in southern China.

In 1939, the American Western Mission funded three gospel ships, named Enguang, Buguang and Changuang. They were all moored in Shamian, Guangzhou.

In 1949, when the Communists came to power and expelled all missionaries from China, all three gospel boats sailed to Hong Kong;  Yau Ma Tei and Causeway Bay were two locations.

Missionaries not only preached the gospel, but also adopted orphans, ran schools and provided free medical care and medicine.

By 1964, the government was relocating the boat people on land on a large scale. For this reason, the church began to rent the then Pastor Dakende's residence for church gatherings.

Later, with the help of the American Western Mission, they purchased part of a building on Oak Street in Tai Kok Tsui as their official church site.

In the 1970s, it moved to the third floor of 237 Tai Kok Tsui Road.

In 1997, it moved to its current address on the first floor of 28 Cheung Fat Street, Cheung Sha Wan.
