Anne Clements was better known as Sister Mary Famula. She served the Maryknoll Sisters and was assigned to Manchuria in 1931. She was later posted to Hong Kong in 1937 and taught at Maryknoll Convent School.

During the fall of Hong Kong, she was stationed at Maryknoll Convent School. On 8 February 1942, a group of eighteen Sisters of the school, including Sister Mary Famula were interned at Stanley Camp.  During her time in Manchuria, Sister Mary Famula had studied Japanese and was a fluent speaker. Whilst in camp, she was able to assist in communicating between the Sisters and the Japanese officers.

In September 1942, Sister Mary Famula and other Maryknoll missionaries were released from confinement (see here). In late 1942, she and three other Maryknoll Sisters made their way to Macau to assist refugees and the poor and needy.

After the war had ended, she returned to Hong Kong and taught at Maryknoll Sisters’ School on Caine Road, and later became Principal of Holy Spirit Primary School in Kwun Tong. Sister Mary Famula left Hong Kong in 1972.
