Frances Clare Murphy was better known as Sister Maria Regis. She served the Maryknoll Sisters and became the Superior at Holy Spirit School.

In 1936, Sister Maria Regis was assigned to Kaying, Kwangtung (Meizhou/Meixian, Guangdong). She worked there until 1941 when she was reassigned teaching duties in Hong Kong.

During the Japanese invasion, she resided in the convent in Holy Spirit School on Caine Road. After the fall of Hong Kong, the Sisters at the convent worked at Queen Mary Hospital to help care for the wounded. On 21 January 1942, Sister Maria Regis and her group of Sisters from Hong Kong Island were interned at Stanley Camp.

In September 1942, Sister Maria Regis and other Maryknoll missionaries were released from confinement (see here). After gaining permission from the Japanese authorities, she left Hong Kong and worked in the inland missions of China.

After the war, Sister Maria Regis continued her missionary and teaching work in Hong Kong. She later became the "Maryknoll" manager in charge of refugee and social work in the King's Park Resettlement Area. In 1965, she was assigned to Taiwan.
