Named after Henry Pottinger, the first Governor of HK between 1843 - 1844.
Aside from its official name 砵典乍街 (砵典乍 is a transliteration of "Pottinger"), it also has the nickname of 石板街 (sek baan gaai lit: Stone Slab Street) thanks to its characteristic construction using stone slabs that can still be seen on the higher (southern) sections.
