Submitted by Klaus on Mon, 06/10/2024 - 20:58

The visit was scheduled to start on Monday, 31st of March, 1890. On this occasion, a “Public and Bank Holiday” was declared

The visit should begin at 10 a.m., but the P&O liner KAISAR –I-HIND, which brought the Duke to Hong Kong from Singapore, was late due to bad weather. The visit started not before the late afternoon of this day, the Duke and Duchess were welcomed by the Acting Governor Mr. F. Fleming and other officials.

During the visit, numerous banquets and speeches were held. On the 1st and 2nd of March, the Duke visited several place, e.g. the Lyemun Battery and the Hongkong and Whampoa Dock Company’s Docks at Kowloon.

During the afternoon of the 2nd April, the Duke laid the Memorial Stone of the Praya Reclamation scheme (*) which was explained in great detail by Mr. C.P. Chater. In the evening, a Chinese dinner was given, accompanied by Chinese music and opera. After the performances (already about midnight), the Duke proceeded in the steam-launch Victoria to view the illuminations of the city. He left Hong Kong on board of the steamer Hankow for Canton.
