- His father (山口安郎) formerly served as a Sergeant Major in the Intelligence Unit of the Japanese Army Infantry and worked in the China region. After retirement, he engaged in import and export business in China. Yamaguchi Getsuro later inherited his father's business in China, and then came to Hong Kong in 1940.
- In August 1940, Yamaguchi was detained by the Hong Kong government for allegedly violating the defense and security measures of the Crown Colony. Under strong protests from Japanese diplomatic officials, he was released in October 1940.
- During the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong, Yamaguchi engaged in import and export business, and he also made a significant donation to a Chinese charitable organization in his personal capacity. (1)
- According to the interview records from 1979, Yamaguchi acknowledged that he was serving for the Ran Agency (蘭機關) in China and Hong Kong under Wachi Yoji (和知鷹二). The Ran Agency was one of the four major intelligence agencies of Japan. (2)
