Sally Gaby was born to Iris and Cyril Gaby in Shanghai in 1935. She was brought up with her cousin, Daphne Cook, daughter of Iris's sister Marjorie and whom the Gabys had agreed to adopt. The family were a part of a swap with Japanese POWs in Australia, where they then settled. Sally was one of the great-grandchildren of the Swedish tavern owner John Olson and grandchild of Charles and Elizabeth Warnes. Both Iris and Marjorie had been brought up and educated at the Canossian Convent after the death of their parents. They lost touch with their younger brother Cyril Warnes, who, at the age of 16, was transported to Canada from a British orphanage for indentured labour or domestic service.

Sally Gaby with NZ cousins
This is a photo of Sally Gaby aged about 3 during a visit to her NZ cousins. Sally is on the left at the top. Her father, Cyril Gaby, a New Zealander who worked for the Chinese customs, took a year's home leave in 1938. The Gabys adopted Sally's cousin, Daphne Cook, whose mother Marjorie lived in Hong Kong. Iris, Sally and Daphne stayed for several months with Marjorie in Hong Kong in advance of Cyril's leave.
