Nearly completed in late 1954 as mention is made of the Sai Wan War Memorial in the 1954 Hong Kong Annual Report.
On 20 February 1955, the Governor unveiled the Memorial at Sai Wan Military Cemetery, in the presence of relatives and friends of the fallen (many of whom who had travelled to Hong Kong from the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia), representatives of the Commonwealth Governments, Board of Admiralty, the Army Council, the Air Council, various religious denominations, ex-Service bodies, local Forces and Government and civil organizations.
The Memorial commemorates 2,056 officers and men of the Land Forces of the Commonwealth who gave their lives in the defence of Hong Kong in 1941, or subsequently died in captivity, and who have no known grave.
