On 1 September 1950, Chief Inspector F. J. Clarke was shot and seriously wounded in a gun battle with an armed kidnapping suspect in Ha Kwai Chung Village. In the incident, the Commanding Officer for Kowloon and New Territories Edmund Colin Luscombe and Detective Sub-Inspector Alexander Leslie were tragically killed. Chief Inspector Clarke retired in 1951 and left for Australia. He is seen here in the China Mail dated 2 June 1951 receiving his farewell gift from the Acting Commissioner of Police.
